El departamento de Junín abarca tanto zonas de sierra como de selva amazónica. Por el oeste, en el límite con Lima, la cordillera presenta cumbres escarpadas cubiertas de nieve. El paisaje se prolonga hacia el este con valles glaciares y mesetas de gran altitud. En la ceja de selva abundan los cañones estrechos y profundos y los bosques de neblina.

La ciudad de Huancayo está ubicada en el Valle del Mantaro, uno de los más fértiles del ande central; sus pobladores se dedican a la agricultura, la ganadería, el comercio y el turismo. Antiguamente la zona estuvo habitada por los Huancas, pueblo enemigo de los Incas, que según la leyenda fue sometido por Pachacútec luego de una feroz resistencia....
